Latam District Managers Set Sights on Inspiring Leadership

District managers of Bata Chile and Peru were among the first to reap the benefits of the Store Sales Improvement training course, which will be rolled out throughout the Bata world. It was a chance for them to focus on their leadership role and all it entails with experienced instructors.

Participants met at the Bata office in Santiago, Chile, together with trainers Gerard Slotboom, Jim Livingstone, Roberto Ramos and company manager Thomas A. Bata.

The district manager is the bridge between the office and stores and is responsible for translating the company’s mission to retail operations. One of the key functions of the district manager, which is examined in-depth in the Store Sales Improvement course, is the demonstration of leadership.

Leadership is a process of social influence that maximizes the efforts of others toward the achievement of a goal. Truly great leaders are excellent communicators, sharing their vision clearly with all parties. Leaders also build strong relationships and inspire others with energy, passion and integrity.

The district managers in attendance zeroed in on the idea that Bata people working in stores should follow them for everything they represent, not just for their job title.

The participants discussed characteristics necessary for a leader, such as “walking the talk,” integrity, coaching of store managers and providing direction. They exchanged experiences and engaged in various small group activities to demonstrate their views on leadership.

Fredy Fernandez, a district manager at Bata Peru, was one of those in attendance. “According to the idea of leadership, an effective leader creates an inspiring vision of the future, motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision. If you want to be a good leader, you should coach and build a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.”
